FATALE FEATURE | thecoolismac

Fully living up to his self-explanatory pseudonym, TheCoolisMac is quickly making a lasting impression upon indie hip hop. The East Atlanta native, by way of Covington Highway, has a humble yet dominating approach to a track never showing that he's already won with his smooth metaphors and thought provoking similes. After releasing his debut mixtape, "I Am A Mac" he rapidly received abundant positive feedback which fueled him up to begin doing live performances and releasing videos such as the classic 'Xxplosive' which instantly took over the blogosphere. Being genuinely patient in everything he does, including this interview, he makes it hard to rush him when he delivers such bars as, "better to be lost than to be standing where y'all at,"that can help you gain an in depth prospective of his thought process while strategically paving the number none spot. Unable to be compared to anyone with a dormant thought and ink filled weapon he's still his number one critic, never giving in to a starving ego.

Always in grind mode, you'll most likely find him in the studio, attending school as a full-time student or out promoting himself as an up and coming indie artist. In between all this, we caught up with him and stole his thoughts...

What can you tell us about your musical background?
Music has taken me from trouble to progressing, from a dream to a reality. I used to steal my families Cassettes & CDs and they would have to hear me BLASTING IT to ever get it back! One time my uncle had the "I Got Five On It" cassette by The Luniz, mind you its 95' 96', and I'm in Elementary School singing "I GOT FIIIIIIIIIVE ON IT!" (and i knew EVERY WORD!). Of course, I had no idea what it meant until i got older. It was pretty lame when I got in trouble back then, but now I understand FULLY, and its STILL pretty lame!

What kind of music or artist inspires you?
I grew up listening to The Fugees ("The Score" is a FAVORITE), Sade, Tony Toni Tone, Xscape, Jay-Z and B.I.G, to name a few. The group I was the most enthusiastic about was Kriss Kross. What kid my age wasn't crazy over them?! I met them at North Dekalb Mall (when it was hot) and we all had the Tuxedo AJ 11s on. After that, I WAS HOOKED!

If we took a look at your iPod, which artists would we be surprised to see?
Sade, Tony Toni Tone, So So Def Bass AllStars (Playa Poncho, Roheem The Dream, City Boyz, etc.) , Anita Baker, Issac Hayes, Barry White, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Prince, James Brown, Bob Marley, and little Curtis Mayfield on the side.

What image do you think your music conveys?
I think my music portrays that kid from the hood who stood close enough to the fire, but never got burned. My rhymes paint a picture of how hot that fire was, is, and can be. I feel like there are many artist (rappers) who portray the image of an individual who has been THROUGH the fire nd its not the truth. I'm real enough to acknowledge my position in my neighborhood, Never stepping outside of that because i have no knowledge there. I speak on what I know and I feel people can respect that. I've seen the worst, but I choose to stay positive. I choose to look at the bright side. I choose to keep it COOL.

Are there any independent/unsigned artists you want to work with?
I've been fortunate to work with a few of the sickest Indy artists out right now. I've yet to work with Sir Will (eastside Atlanta), Al Grean (eastside Atlanta), I.L. (Cleveland), Cold Train, and Stanza. The rest of 'em need work.

His next mixtape titled "Macnificent", is set to drop late July, early August 2010. "The title "Macnificent" comes from the efforts and relationships being cemented along with those already set in stone, it happened so beautifully. The music came to us in a way that I cant explain." he explains. The mixtape is produced by Wonder  (Grammy Winner), TD3000, B.R.E, Bolow, and MonstarrBeatz. It also includes features by up and coming artist BornRich, Rico Jr, Ceeno Hatas, Ray Dolo, Zoo and Playmakers Mykko Montana. The new mixtape is particularly different from his "I'm a Mac" mixtape. Be prepared to hear a splash of brand new sounds and crazy samples, along with the sound that you might be used to hearing from him. Also, keep your eyes open for a documentary titled "Hungry" that he is planning on shooting with the help of @pgoodie (ROYALSUITEMEDIA). Big thangs poppin'...
